James Mallory Frey Deemas

I was born in San Diego, California, United States, on August 12, 1934. Now, 91 years later, I’m trying to recall anything interesting in my past, and I am not finding much. As a child biology was of interest, evidenced by my brother and I bringing home one day a jar full of black widow spiders that we had captured scurrying around in some enormos drainage pipes. We could have gotten bitten or drowned, but I guess Providence was with us.

As an adolescent and through college I was a loner. I do remember getting incensed when the High School English teacher implied that I had copied for a homwork paper. He said, “Did you really write that?” Some guy in the back row piped up, “Yeah, sometimes he talks like that too..” I took Latin for three years in High School, and regret that I didn’t follow up, but studied German in college. I graduated with a degree in Zoology.

After graduation I worked for eight years in Oceanography, first at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, then at the University of Rhode Island. That was when I learned computer programming, cutting my teeth with assembler on an IBM 360. I’ve been in computing off and on since then.

In 1971 I moved to Mexico. Here I have worked as a teacher (English, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics and Computing), programmer and in Computer department management. My last paid activity was as an independent, mostly web programming. I also became a Catholic and married.

A few years ago I was introduced to phenomenological meitation durung spiritual exercises. Imagining that I was in a biblical scenes somehow got me into writing short stories. (My writing experience until then was technical.) My friends liked them, so I published the stories on Kindle, in English and Spanish. Other than that, I have translated a public domain book from Spanish and published an ebook of both the Spanish original and the translation. Currently I publish with bubok.es for Spanish and bubok.com for English. My goal is to publish, because I think my books have something to say, and I might make some money.
